Autel or Launch? How to choose between the two

Autel and Launch dominate the mid-range diagnostic market, and their spec sheets read almost identically: full-system diagnostics, bi-directional control, ECU coding, CAN FD and DoIP. Both are established Chinese manufacturers whose tools sit in professional workshops across Europe. So the honest starting point is this: at the same price, neither is meaningfully better than the other. The differences are narrower and more specific than the marketing suggests.

Where Launch genuinely wins

Update costs. This is the biggest practical difference and the one most buyers overlook. Launch's CRP range ships with two years of free updates included, and the CRP123X updates free for the life of the tool. Autel typically includes one year, after which renewal is optional but paid. Over three years that gap can exceed the price difference between the two tools you were comparing.

Value in the €300-500 band. The X431 CRP919E and CRP919E BT deliver full-system diagnostics, bi-directional control and 31 service functions at a price where Autel's equivalents are usually a step behind on features.

Where Autel genuinely wins

Key programming and immobiliser work. This is not close. Autel's MaxiIM line - the IM508S and IM608 II - is the reference platform for locksmiths and workshops doing all-keys-lost work. Launch has capable IMMO tools, but if key work is a core part of your business, Autel is the safer choice.

Topology mapping. Autel's mid and upper range - including the MaxiPRO MP900 - draws the vehicle's module network visually. On an intermittent electrical fault across multiple modules, seeing the whole network at once turns an afternoon of probing into a few minutes.

Build and interface. Autel's housings and software feel a little more polished. This is subjective and it will not change a diagnosis, but if a tool lives in your hands eight hours a day it is worth mentioning.

Where it honestly makes no difference

  • Reading and clearing fault codes across all systems
  • Common service resets - oil, EPB, SAS, DPF regeneration, battery registration
  • Live data and active component testing
  • Coverage of mainstream European, Asian and American makes

For the everyday mix that walks into a general workshop, a Launch and an Autel at the same price will both do the job. Anyone telling you one brand is categorically better is selling something.

So which should you buy?

  • Private owner or enthusiast: pick on price and update policy. Launch CRP123X is hard to beat on lifetime free updates.
  • Mobile mechanic: either. Choose on whether you want a wireless VCI - CRP919E BT - or a wired connection that never drops mid-coding.
  • General workshop: Launch X431 PROS V5.0 or Autel MaxiPRO MP900. Decide on topology mapping versus update cost.
  • Workshop adding key services: Autel, without hesitation.
